The 6 Essential Elements of Web Design for Small Building & Remodeling Contractors (and other small businesses too!)

I come with 45+ years of experience in the Building & Remodeling Home &Garden Industry so I when I think about the topic of  “Essential Elements of Web Design” it comes from that perspective BUT these element all carry over into other small business models too.

Like most small business sectors today in the competitive landscape of the construction and remodeling industry, a well-crafted website is a powerful tool for building and remodeling contractors to showcase their expertise and attract potential clients. To ensure your website stands out and effectively communicates your brand, consider incorporating the following six essential elements developing your company’s web design:

1. A Responsive Web Layout

In an era dominated by smartphones and tablets, having a responsive web layout is non-negotiable. Your website should adapt seamlessly to various screen sizes, providing an optimal viewing experience for users on desktops, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. A responsive design not only enhances user experience but also positively impacts search engine rankings, making your site more accessible to a broader audience.

Make sure your company’s website’s layout translates well onto mobile phones, tablets, and computer screens both desktop and laptop.

2. Easy Navigation and Mapping

When customers click on your website, they should seamlessly find a service or location page or the kind of content they are looking for. Don’t make tough on your prospective clients to figure out how to get around and search your website too!

User-friendly navigation is crucial for keeping visitors engaged and guiding them through your website effortlessly. Implement clear and intuitive navigation menus that help users find information quickly.

Additionally, consider incorporating mapping features, allowing potential clients to locate your business and define you service area easily. Interactive maps and well-organized navigation menus contribute to a positive user experience, encouraging visitors to explore your services further.

3. A Diverse Mix of Media Subjects

Capture the attention of your audience with a diverse mix of media subjects. Utilize high-quality images, engaging videos, and relevant graphics to showcase your completed projects, team members, and the overall process of construction or remodeling. Visual content is a powerful tool for conveying your expertise and creating a lasting impression on visitors.

Try to use:

  • Staff photos
  • Worksite photos
  • Brief embedded videos
  • Infographics

Personalize and humanize your company.

PLUS (and this is a big one!),… make sure you images have Alt Descritions and are Optimized!

Optimizing images is crucial for boosting your website’s search engine ranking. Search engines crawl and index images, and larger image sizes can negatively impact your site’s speed. A slow website is likely to receive a lower ranking on search engine results pages (SERPs).

4. Unique Branding Constituents

Develop a strong and unique brand identity through your website. Incorporate your logo, color schemes, and distinctive design elements consistently across all your web pages post and social media too. Develop a Brand Kit and or style guide for your company.  A cohesive and memorable branding strategy helps build trust and recognition among potential clients. Showcase your company’s personality and values through your web design to differentiate yourself from competitors.

5. Informative Yet Keyword-Rich Content

They Ask, You Answer book cover Craft content that strikes a balance between being informative and search engine optimized. Use the TAYA They Ask, You Answer model pioneered by Marcus Sheridan. Provide valuable information about your services, industry trends, and construction/remodeling tips. Incorporate relevant keywords naturally to enhance your website’s visibility on search engine results pages. Quality content not only educates your audience but also establishes your authority in the field.

And don’t add ranking keywords to content despite not offering services connected to that keyword that will hurt you brand in the long run.

Keep you content relevant to what you do. Relevant keywords and phrases help your website rank higher in search results. Use keywords featuring your location and service offerings throughout your written content, headings, and URLs. Some examples of relevant keyword use for some various types of contractors include:

  • Kitchen Remodeling near me
  • Painters in CITY, STATE
  • How to diagnose and repair a leaking roof
  • Attic fan installation services

And if your company doesn’t do Kitchen Remodeling, Painting, Roofs, and Ventilation tasks or projects you can still stalk about them to demonstate your expertise and knowledge on the general subject of home improvement and remodeling The Trusted Advisor book cover(The Trusted Advisor Model as described in David H. Maister’s book of the same name) and make your company the go to company for home improvement answers and a supporting lead source for your subcontracting trade partners. In other words develop a reputation for being extremely knowlegeable and helpful.  Be your client’s and prospective clients’ personal This Old House expert.

With the Trust Advisor model you’re providing concierge service  that deal with you client’s or potential clients “pain” points (see The Sandler Method: What is the Sandler pain funnel?).

Concierge once referred to the person in a hotel who would take care of everything from getting you a table at a fully booked restaurant to advising you on fascinating places to visit during your stay.

Concierge has come to refer to personalized and on-demand  services that include finding you a roofer to fix a leak or directing you to a landscaper to get you driveway plowed of snow, etc.

Concierge businesses have sprung up in recent years to help busy and successful people with the one asset that they need the most… Time.

6. Transparency

Transparency is a key element in building trust with potential clients so applying an unwavering policy of transparency in all content development is a must.

Clearly communicate your services, pricing structures, and project timelines on your website and don’t say what you think your audience wants to hear, tell the truth about what you company can deliver when.

Include testimonials, case studies, or before-and-after photos to showcase your past successes. Being transparent about your processes and client experiences instills confidence in visitors, increasing the likelihood of converting them into clients.

By integrating these six essential elements into your web design, building and remodeling contractors can create a compelling online presence that resonates with their target audience and sets them apart in a competitive market.

Notice the special relationship Executive Chef Phillip Lopez has with his seafood supplier.

At 11:40 into the video Executive Chef Phillip Lopez says: ” You walk outside on Bourbon Street, and it’s just nonstop music, and drinking, and just revelry. And that has to carry through into the dining room. And so, that chaos is really what makes Galatoire’s so special. It’s the heartbeat and DNA of who we are.”

In other words it The Experience which is so important. I first read the book: The Experience Economy, Competing for Customer Time, Attention, and Money when the first edition came out in 1999 and the message in the book is more relevant today than ever that businesses must orchestrate memorable events for their customers, and that memory itself becomes the product: the “experience”. More advanced experience businesses can begin charging for the value of the “transformation” that an experience offers.
